THE STORY From Trace Jurica -- Co-founder of Town Creek My brother Shawn and I grew up in New Braunfels in the 1980’s, at a time when the town was quite small, sleepy and self-contained. HEB, the large regional grocer, was in town on West San Antonio Street, not on the highway like it is now, and Wal-Mart was still years away. Downtown looked much as it does today, as it has for over a century, and it is still the special place it was back then. These days in Downtown the shops are classier, the restaurants are more and better, and there are more people enjoying its charms, yet it is still common to see someone I know when I walk down the street. The neighborhoods around Downtown still have the same grace and convenience they always have, with their diversity of house styles, sizes, types and ages, as well as their diversity of residents. In these neighborhoods you might find a hip, young artist living in his funky remodeled ranch house next door to a retired school teacher in her gingerbread Victorian. Both of them love where they are, and love that they are just a stone’s throw away from everything Downtown has to offer. So when we discovered 65 acres for sale, directly adjacent to Downtown, for us the choice was clear. We decided to make more of a good thing – a place that continues the wonderful traditions of an already wonderful Downtown. That is the spirit in which we are creating Town Creek, and we hope that is the spirit in which you will enjoy our creation. We assembled a team of urban planners and engineers, along with our partner David Wolters, who brings valuable real estate development experience to Town Creek. The whole town has actually contributed to the creation of Town Creek. In June 2006 we held a series of public meetings to refine the form of Town Creek, and to gather the best ideas for its future. Numerous stakeholders attended, including City Council Members, adjacent land owners, civic groups, Planning & Zoning Commissioners, local realtors, and interested citizens. The result is what you are seeing today, an ambitious vision for a new urban village that both complements and brings new relevance to New Braunfels’ Downtown. |
